2026 John Beargrease musher roster

(Nothing like waiting until the 11th hour to get this up, but here we are. 4 major races in one weekend is too much of a good thing!)

The John Beargrease Marathon, 120, and 80 mile races are set to take off Sunday morning. After not being able to have their 40th race last year due to lack of snow, everyone has been able to breathe a sigh of relief that the race is on! Of course, most of the Lower 48, including the trails of the Beargrease are dealing with crazy negative temps this weekend, but it seems that things are warming up for the teams tomorrow.

Because this post is so late we're not going to spend a lot of time jibber jabbering. The rosters this year are quite big with a lot of exciting names on each. To get all of the info on the race you'll want to check the race's official website and facebook page. They normally throw one heck of a party for the start, so make sure your computer is ready for more livefeeds (if you aren't already bogged down with all the livefeeds from the three races in Alaska).

Let's get straight to the rosters, now, shall we!

Registrations are high this race season

October brings so much with it; snow in the Alaskan interior, cooler temps, Northern Lights return, and mid-distance sled dog races all over North America open up their race registrations. Mid-distance races are always popular with kennels of all sizes, and 2026's race season is looking especially full of new and returning faces. In a time when the longer distance races are fighting to keep going (Iditarod faces another year with a roster as small as the early years of the race, the Quest is still split in two with smaller rosters and trail difficulties) it seems mid-distance is where the real excitement is building.

October is traditionally when most of the Alaskan races open registration, with the Copper Basin and the Knik races starting the charge. With the Knik races the 100 is scheduled for late December (Dec 20, 2025 to be exact) and the 200 is set to be the first race of 2026 (January 2, 2026). Within hours (or maybe minutes) of registration opening, the Knik 100 was full with a healthy waiting list. The 200 at last check still has a few slots available.

Copper Basin (set to run January 10, 2026) also opened its registration at the very beginning of October, releasing the roster Thursday morning. It, too, is full with a waiting list started. The CB caps its roster at 40 entries and hasn't seen a full roster in several years (it's often come close, however). Dubbed the toughest 300 miles on sled, the Copper Basin is a fan and musher favorite, so it's no surprise it has a robust roster.

The most successful (financially if not also for fandom and musher roster alike) mid-distance race in Alaska - the Kuskokwim 300 opened still has a couple of spots left on its roster after just 24 hours of registration open. The race caps at 20 and is one of only two major mid-distance races not accessible by road. Teams not in Westeran Alaska fly in days ahead of race day and are hosted by local families in Bethel. The Kusko boasts a hefty purse each year and receives high praise as one of - if not the best - run organizations in mushing. Its roster has quite the star studded line up as Iditarod and Local legends are set to compete January 23, 2026.

Outside of Alaska the famous John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon opened registration and boasts a strong roster. They currently have thirteen signed up for the marathon and fifteen for the shorter distance. The excitement is building after last year's devastating cancelation due to lack of snow in the Mid-West and Upper Peninsula. Everyone everywhere is hoping for snow as even Alaska found it difficult to keep snow on the ground and forced a last minute move for the Start of Iditarod to Fairbanks. The Beargrease hopes to leave the starting line January 25, 2026.

There are many more races with registration open or set to open soon. Mushing social media is all a buzz as kennels announce their plans for racing season. Recreational teams as well as Professional teams come together for these smaller more intimate races and the spirit of mushing feels as fresh and alive as ever. 2026 looks to be an exciting racing season for fans and teams alike.

John Beargrease 40th run canceled due to lack of snow

As the Midwest continues to experience a historically whacky winter of no snow nor freezing temperatures, the mushing community has anxiously watched their season disappear. Most teams were still training teams with ATVs instead of the traditional sleds over the Christmas holiday. Races preparing for late January and Early February starts made statements warning that decisions would be announced after the new year.

Gunflint was first to announce a postponement of their race. With a race date of January 6, they had to announce a change of date as soon as possible. December 23 they announced that they would postpone the race until February 10, saying they took into account dates of other races so as not to take from anyone. Race officials say they need at least two feet of snow and frozen lakes to be able to pull off a race and will be watching weather reports obsessively.

Then today, January 2, the news broke with the release of the statement by the John Beargrease board that there would be no Beargrease in 2024. They could not find a future date that would not interfere with other races and so they've chosen to postpone the 40th running for a year citing the new date as January 26, 2025.

"For Immediate Press Release:

RE: John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon 2024 Race

January 2, 2024

After months of waiting for the weather to cooperate, the Board of Directors for the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon has made the decision to postpone the 40th running to January 26, 2025. This was not an easy decision. But, with concerns over the weather, safety of the dogs, mushers and volunteers it was the only decision that we felt comfortable with.

There have been many discussions about postponing to a later date this winter but the weather is unpredictable. Likewise, in the effort to find a postponement date and in the spirit of sportsmanship, there was not another date that didn’t impede on another established race.

The Beargrease will continue to have several fundraising events so stay tuned to our socials and website for how you can continue to support this amazing race that we all love so much."

Mushers in the region had already made alternate plans seeing the writing on the wall that their winter season was in jeopardy. Ryan Redington and Wade Marrs posted over the weekend that they were on the road with a full dog truck headed for Knik Alaska to run the Knik 200. Redington also announced he was on the roster for the Kusko 300 - replacing Brent Sass who has chosen to focus on training for bigger races this season. Any team from the Midwest facing no snow for the season who plan to run the Iditarod will no doubt have to make similar decisions to head north earlier than originally planned - with no Beargrease to run in January those moves could happen at any time.

With no winter weather in the forecast for the foreseeable future, races are now asking everyone to "think snow!"

2023 John Beargrease roster and race preview

Not so fast, race fans! We've got another race taking off this weekend. Sunday marks the start of the John Beargrease Marathon in Minnesota and as the first of the BIG races in the US, this is one you'll want to follow. Lots of familiar names will be on this roster that fans will most definitely be cheering for.

As always, the roster will be listed in alphabetical order until I get the bib numbers and then the post will be edited. Due to concerns with trail conditions the race capped entries early in December, but the roster is still very strong.

As of Saturday morning there are eighteen teams ready to start on Sunday.

How to Follow
The John Beargrease has a wonderful media team for the race, and you'll no doubt want for nothing for the live feed of the start and finish. Both local media outlet WDIO and Mushing Midwest plan to livestream the start Sunday morning, and they've also streamed the finish in the past.

Official Site
One of the best ways to keep track with the race is to use the Beargrease's website. It has loads of information on the race and links to the tracker, live feeds, musher bios, and time sheets.

GPS Tracker
Trackleaders.com once again comes through with the fan favorite spot trackers. You won't miss the action following those cute little beep boops.

Social Media
As with most sled dog races, the Beargrease is fairly active on their facebook page and they do have a twitter account though it isn't very active. And for a few pics check them out on Instagram
