Su Dog 300 holds lottery for musher roster

The Su-Dog saw a full and running over roster during this weekend's open registration. The race's second run is off to a fantastic start with teams of all levels of experience jumping at the chance to sign up. In a single day (the race reported in the first five minutes!) they received 25 applications all hoping to be pulled in the lottery to fill the 20 race slots.

The race announced just days ahead of registration that the roster would be chosen by random lottery of completed applications. It would be done over a livefeed the day after registration. Twenty slots were available, a waitlist would start for any team over that number not chosen in the lottery (and for later sign ups).

Mushers and fans alike tuned in to watch the names be drawn. Some even took their own video of the lottery when their name was drawn. Not only were they drawn to run the race, but the order they were drawn was their bib number - no need for a bib draw the day before the start! Quite the efficient set up.

While the race capped at 20, because a musher from last year's race won an entry fee and they signed up for this year's they were guaranteed a spot, so there are a total of twenty-one teams getting ready for the race in February.

The second running of the Su Dog will take place February 20, 2027 - starting at the Willow Community Center. Mushers can sign up to be put on the waiting list by visiting the Su Dog 300 website.

What do you think about how the race chose to handle registrations? Who are you cheering for? Comment below with your thoughts!
