In the Founder's Class includes Dick Mackey, Dick Tozier, Leo Rasmussen, John Norman, and Doug Swingley. It is up to the Hall of Fame committee to determine how many are chosen for this category. Each of the men listed for 2026 made a huge impact on the race, be it behind the scenes or running under the arch multiple times (and sometimes doing both).
The Musher's Class inductees this year are both women with huge impacts within not just the Iditarod race but the sport itself. Up to three mushers may be named per year. This year DeeDee Jonrowe and Aliy Zirkle join the ranks.
The Canine Class is possibly the most important of the classes. Without the canine athletes there would be no reason for the Iditarod to exist. Up to two may be nominated in a year. This year Susan Butcher's beloved Granite and Rick Swenson's best Andy will be honored by the Hall of Fame. Granite and Andy were key to the long standing rivalry on the Iditarod trail between the two legendary mushers.
The Volunteer Class honors those who donate their time and talent (many times with long hours and little sleep) to the race. With Iditarod coming up on its 55th race in 2027, many volunteers have been with the race for 40-50 years, bringing along with them new volunteers every year as they invite new fans to join the ranks. Two volunteers may be nominated per year. This year Cheryl Zachary and Bob Sept will be honored by the Hall of Fame.
The Contributor Class "recognizes individuals, organizations, media professionals, sponsors, and partners whose dedication and support have strengthened, sustained, and advanced the Iditarod community and its enduring legacy." The Hall of Fame allows for one inductee per year and this year it was given to a very deserving group of Iditarod supporters - the Iditarod Airforce. The Airforce is crucial to the logistics of holding the Iditarod, they get the gear, volunteers, and dogs to and from the trail - mostly at their own expense (time and financial) using their own gear and planes.
Inductees will be honored at the Legends of Iditarod Gala held at the Alaska Aviation Museum in Anchorage on October 15. Tickets may be purchased through the Gala's website, with tickets ranging from $225 per person or tables and sponsorship $1049-$2000.
